A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
