Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.

The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they added.

Officers then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.

An important representative commented the attack rendered him without words and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
