Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.
An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The story begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
