Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
