When Sunbathers Fled Violence, Popular Picture Shows Lifeguard Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, has always considered the renowned beach as her personal space. On that particular Sunday evening, she, like many neighbors, detected pops reverberating around the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the avenue, talking to a duo who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she noticed someone moving up from behind. The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and barefoot … He’s running towards something that surely every fibre in your being would instruct you to go in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally full throttle sprinting.”

A Symbol of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of heroism in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, officers and ambulance crews treating numerous those hurt.

Collective Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the beach facility next to the location of the incident serving as a makeshift treatment center. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen taking action, such as entering the water to assist people needing help.

After the events, messages of gratitude circulated widely. A social media message conveyed gratitude for the individuals who showed that “compassion will always conquer hatred”.

The squad of lifeguards issued a communication, explaining they were “processing what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and solidarity. We are touched by the care shown towards our responders,” the group wrote. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it supports those involved.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the incident commenced until late that night.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a mayor.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned beaches safe for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and process the horror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is important that we consider just how much positivity we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
